When Your Vacation Itinerary Includes Urgent Care

What began as a peaceful night in a beautiful Airbnb quickly turned into an unexpected visit to a small-town clinic after a broken glass led to a few painful cuts. In this vlog, an unplanned detour into urgent care becomes a reminder of the kindness, generosity, and quiet compassion that travelers sometimes find in the most unexpected places.

A Perfect Morning… Almost

When I woke up, this was my view.

Just imagine: quiet countryside, soft morning light, and the distant sounds of nature waking up around me.

Incredible.

El Salvador just keeps getting better.

This stop was supposed to be my moment of peace. I booked a lovely Airbnb out in the middle of nowhere with one goal in mind: Downtime.

Apparently, the universe had other plans.

How a Perfect Evening Turned Into Urgent Care

The evening started beautifully.

I had dinner at a fantastic local restaurant—one of the best meals I’ve had in El Salvador. A veggie burrito that was absolutely perfect.

Everything about the night felt calm and easy.

I returned to the Airbnb, poured myself a drink, and relaxed.

Then I did something very simple.

I washed the glass.

And while drying it…

I dropped it.

The glass shattered instantly.

And so did the calm.

The Moment Things Get Scary

I cut myself in multiple places.

Two cuts on one hand.

One deep cut on the other.

And that last one… was gushing blood.

Any time you’re injured, it’s scary.

But when you’re injured in a foreign country—one where you don’t speak the language well—it becomes a whole different level of anxiety.

Fortunately, I had a basic first aid kit.

I rinsed the wounds thoroughly (because glass), cleaned them with alcohol (again—because glass), and bandaged them as best as I could.

Eventually the bleeding stopped.

But one cut—deep on my thumb—still worried me.

So I called my travel insurance provider.

They told me the nearest recommended medical facility was over an hour away in San Miguel.

Not ideal.

But then the Airbnb owner messaged back with better news.

There was a small clinic just 12 minutes away.

Meanwhile… the Dogs

Before leaving, I needed to pack the car.

Which would have been simple if not for the local welcoming committee.

Two dogs.

No collars.

Very skinny.

And extremely organized.

Apparently every guest feeds them—which means they now run a highly effective hospitality strategy based entirely on puppy eyes.

I fed them the night before.

And again this morning.

They followed me around the house like security detail.

They jumped on me. Sat under the car. Looked at me like we were now family.

This was not bribery.

This was strategy.

Because I needed them distracted long enough to pack my car without emotional interference.

But leaving them behind? That part is always hard.

Stray dogs have a way of choosing you, even if only temporarily.

And when they do, it’s difficult not to feel a little guilty driving away.

Medicine via Google Translate

The clinic itself was small and simple.

I found myself in the back room, having a deeply serious medical conversation with a very kind nurse… entirely through Google Translate.

Technology was doing most of the heavy lifting.

She examined my fingers carefully, looking for any remaining glass.

I explained—via phone—that I had dropped a glass and attempted basic first aid.

She nodded calmly, checked the wounds, and confirmed something very important:

No glass remained.

Small victory.

The Kindness of a Stranger

She cleaned the cuts again, applied a thick white ointment, and carefully rebandaged each finger.

She paid special attention to my thumb—the deepest cut and main offender.

Most importantly, the bleeding had stopped.

She worked gently, making sure the process hurt as little as possible.

The instructions were simple:

  • Keep the bandages on for 24 hours

  • Keep them dry

  • No shower

A sacrifice I will make bravely.

She even gave me directions to another clinic near my next destination, just in case anything looked suspicious later.

And then…

She sent me on my way.

No charge.

A Moment of Perspective

I’ll be honest.

I didn’t expect this level of care in such a small town.

But between the wonderful Airbnb, the incredible meal, and this unexpectedly compassionate medical visit, Delicias de Concepción completely won me over.

I will absolutely come back.

The kindness I experienced there was extraordinary.

And I couldn’t help but think:

In the United States, a clinic visit like this would almost certainly come with paperwork, wait times, and a bill.

Here?

It came with kindness and a smile.

Not the Day I Planned—But the One I Needed

The truth is, I didn’t get the quiet day of rest I expected.

Instead, I got something better.

Kindness.

Care.

And yet another reminder that El Salvador keeps showing up for me in ways I never expect.

As I drove away from Delicias de Concepción, bandaged but grateful, I realized something simple:

Travel rarely unfolds the way we plan it.

But sometimes the unexpected moments—those strange detours into urgent care—become the most meaningful parts of the journey.

And once again, El Salvador reminded me why I travel in the first place.
